HOLAwave: Hispanic Heritage Month... eh, ¿qué?

HOLAwave represents a series of guest blogs by industry insiders giving informative and educational tidbits for the Latino performer. They can range from acting and auditioning advice, tech tips, legal advice, marketing, producing tips, and so on. Get caught up in the wave– the HOLAwave.]

What is Hispanic Heritage Month? Seriously, I'm Colombian and I have no idea. I don't remember it being a big deal in school. I can't recall seeing commercials on TV reminding me about the celebration of my heritage during mid-September through mid-October. (Honestly, who chose those dates?)

According to HispanicHeritageMonth.org, this "month" is where "we recognize the important contributions made by the presence of Hispanics and Latino Americans to the United States". That sounds awesome! So, where and when does this happen? Is there a Facebook invite I missed? A hashtag I'm supposed to be using? If there is a celebration, it must not be about Latinos. Trust me, we celebrate anything– my family turns a 5 year old's birthday party into a 4am dancing and drinking fest.

Something feels odd, I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it's the fact that although Hispanics make up the second largest ethnic group and 17% of the total U.S. population, it still feels like we're hidden in the kitchens and cleaning rooms of America. Never mind that Latinos/Hispanics have the highest movie attendance average among other races/ethnic groups. According to the theatrical market statistics report released by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), Hispanics continue to be the largest growing percentage of moviegoers and more likely than any other ethnic group to go to the movies. In contrast, Caucasian moviegoers have declined to less than half of what it had been and other ethnic groups have remained stable since 2009.

Now pair this with the study done by the the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at University of Southern California showing that out of all the characters in the top grossing films from 2007-2013, only 4.9% were Hispanic/Latino characters. So what does this say about America? The facts are there, one ethnic group continues to grow, yet remains under-represented within the country in which it lives.

It's not just movies. Hispanics lag behind other racial and ethnic groups in college enrollment. In politics, although there's been an increase in Latinos serving in elected office, only 3.3% of nationally elected seats are held by Latinos. Make no mistake about it though, once election season comes around, everyone will be running around speaking Spanish and talking immigration trying to dip their hands in the 25.2 million Hispanic voters in 2014.

It feels like we're the unwanted child. How am I supposed to feel proud celebrating my heritage in a country whose actions have done the opposite in accepting me as a member of society? How can I truly feel proud of what my people have done for the history of America when I had to change my name from Hernando to Josh to rent an apartment? Or why I had to start including my picture when submitting job applications because of fear I was getting pushed aside for my name?

There was a glimmer of hope. Last year, PBS released a six-hour documentary called "Latino Americans"highlighting the stories and history of Latinos and Hispanics in America. I guess I should settle for yearly replays of a documentary that I didn't hear about until after it aired. Besides that, what reason do I have to celebrate? Why should I be excited? It's not like there's some bug event that has a heave Hispanic influence and seen nationwide by everyone. It's not like the past two years, the Major League Baseball (MLB) Most Valuable Player Award in the American League has gone to the same player, a Venezuelan native. Makes me wonder how exciting the MLB postseason would be without Hispanics, especially since the MLB postseason coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hernando Caicedo moved to the United States from Colombia with his family and settled in Florida. There he attended the University of South Florida majoring in Mass Communications and Theater. Afterwards he moved to New York where he studied film and television at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. Upon graduating he had the opportunity to work on several stage productions including Prophet of Borough Park and Transubstantiation (directed by André Glant-Linden). He most recently starred as Romeo in the independent film Romeo and Juliet in Harlem (directed by Aleta Chappelle).

LISTEN TO THE BELOW PROMO FROM MANUEL HERRERA

Manuel Herrera's Spanish Language Voiceover Workshop was instrumental in my career development. Since I took this workshop, I have booked a number of Spanish-language commercials, industrials, dubbing, and special projects. In the past year alone, based only on my voiceover demo (which is on file at a commercial media company), I was offered a television campaign and was brought back three times. As a result I earned over $30,000. Take this workshop. Manuel is an excellent teacher, and you can be sure to increase your skills and earning capacity. Actor, playwright, director, producer and voiceover artist MARIO GOLDEN

HOLA
is a not-for-profit arts service and advocacy organization founded in 1975.

HOLA members get their headshots and resumes on our web directory. In addition, HOLA receives casting notices from various sources that we pass on to our members (or in specific cases, help refer actors to the casting director).

HOLA offers low-cost workshops and seminars, professional counseling, special events and networking activities. We also produce the HOLA Awards which honor outstanding achievement by Latinos in entertainment.

HOLA has a Facebook page and a Twitter page in addition to this blog (imaginatively titled El Blog De HOLA). Whenever a member is doing a project, we can promote via e-mails we send out, through our Members in Performance page on the website or in El Blog on our HOLA Member Bochinche column (only good bochinche, never bad bochinche). It functions as another outlet to promote your work. HOLA is also on YouTube and on Wikipedia.

Hollywood's Most Bankable Latina Actress is Catherine Zeta-Jones

By A.B. Lugo.

Griselda Blanco.
Ever since La Madrina, the female Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, was killed in a drive-by assassination in 2012, Hollywood has been clamoring to tell her story.

Overdone Colombian cartel trope? Check. Based on a true story? Check. Strong female lead to get the feminist angle (and female audience)? Check and check.

Let's get a strong director for this film. Who can tell this story of a South American "queenpin"? I know, let's get Eva Sørhaug. She's directed a handful of films. I mean, she's Norwegian, but at least she's a woman. That's close enough.

And Norway in Spanish is Noruega. Noruega... Noriega... Escobar. Yeah, that'll work.

Now who to cast in the lead role of The Godmother (La Madrina)... let's see. She has to be known, she has to be tough, she has to be relatable to women, she has to have the acting chops (in that order).

How about an Academy Award winner? How about someone who has played Latinas in three films (The Mask of Zorro, Traffic and The Legend of Zorro— incidentally for characters named Elena or Helena)?

Catherine Zeta-Jones.
I got it! Let's get Catherine Zeta-Jones.

She's perfect. The dark Latin (yet safely not African nor American indigenous) looks are mainstream enough for an American audience (which is mostly Latino anyway).

Zeta... that's the letter Z in Spanish, right? Equis, Greek I, Zeta.

And she's not American. She's foreign-ish. That'll ensure a Golden Globe nomination.

Yes, Catherine Zeta-Jones is from the Hispanic nation of Cymru. Cymru? You know Cymru. Maybe you know it by its English name of Wales.

Cymru, or Wales (in green).
Raise your hand if you can find Wales on a map. (I can, but I am a bit of a geography geek.) Wales is next to England. It is part of the United Kingdom and birthplace of Anthony Hopkins. (Who knew Hannibal Lecter was Latino?)

Zeta-Jones is a clearly talented actress-singer-dancer, winning a Tony for A Little Night Music and an Oscar for playing Velma Kelly in the movie musical Chicago (incidentally, the other lead female role, Roxie Hart, is being played, at this writing, by the Latina actress-singer-dancer Bianca Marroquín).

I cannot wait to see the nuances la señora Zeta-Jones de Douglas will bring to the role. Will she bring the requisite toughness and grittiness the role requires?

Colombia (in green).
Will she tap into the "volatile" Celtic temper she possesses in order to nail the Latina temperament, such as she had when she played Elena? (Or was it Helena?)

Will she nail that Medellín paisa accent that is quite distinct from the accents of Bogotá, Barranquilla or San Andrés y Providencia? (The accents are as distinct as say, Californian vs. New Englander vs. Deep Southerner. Or as different as say, English vs. Irish, or even Welsh.)

Will she breathe new life into the tired stereotype of the Colombian head of a cartel, an image that has been around since Hollywood discovered cocaine (and claimed it as its very own)?

Most importantly, will Zeta-Jones look sexy and desirable in the role. which is a requisite for a Hollywood major motion picture?

It's refreshing to know that in 2014 Hollywood's most bankable Latina actress is neither Jennifer López, nor Zoë Saldaña nor Cameron Díaz nor Salma Hayek nor Michelle Rodríguez nor even Jessica Alba?

Hollywood's most bankable Latina actress is Catherine Zeta-Jones.

(The only problem is she's not even remotely Latina.)
