Tío Louie Reporta: Sonia Fritz

HOLA is proud to present Tío Louie Reporta, where filmmaker and Executive Producer of Prime Latino Media, Louis Perego Moreno (also known as Tío Louie) interviews actors and multimedia-makers in the business.

In this edition, Tío Louie interviews filmmaker-professor Sonia Fritz (América). The interview took place at the June edition of the Prime Latino Media Salón (presented by Tío Louie, HOLA and United Latino Professionals-New York) on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Meridian 23 Bar and Lounge in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.

Sonia Fritz proudly lives in Puerto Rico for 27 years as a narrative and documentary filmmaker, as well as a tenured Professor in the Communications Department at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan. She was born in Mexico to a German father and Mexican mother. As she shared in our interview, “these varied cultural backgrounds have given me a lens to see life and subject matters from multiple perspectives.”

She has directed over 25 documentaries and the feature film América with Lymari Nadal in the lead role, as well as Edward James Olmos and Tony Plana. Her recent credits include co-directing Chapters 1 and 2 of the PBS series "Latin Americans", which won the 2014 Peabody Award. Her present projects in development are two documentaries, Lighthouses of Puerto Rico (Faro) and a documentary on an all-female mariachi band, Flor de Toloache, while also developing a feature film, Marina’s Secret World (with support from the Dominican Republic and Spain).

While currently on break from teaching at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, she spent the month of June at NYU and took a two-week seminar on Directing Actors at HB Studios with Jack Garfein. She was absolutely bowled over by the experience and as a film director working with actors I started my questions in this arena.

And while some people give their two cents (their opinions) on things, I asked for ten cents ("Dime tus $0.10"), adjusted for inflation, after all.

Sonia Fritz

• Now that you have directed three feature films, what new concepts did you learn about working with actors? Jack Garfein is a theater director and has also done films. The whole seminar was about working with professional actors who were taking the class and directors like me, seeking to refine the art of directing. Not only did he teach you, but he wove his life into the storytelling, having worked with the likes of Arthur Miller, Elia Kazan and Marilyn Monroe. He was married to Carole Baker of Baby Doll [fame], directed by Elia Kazan. He has also written a book entitled Life and Acting.
• Cite some examples that he engaged the group in that struck you most. I liked how he directed the actors. I liked how he would point out how they could make scenes better and based on his recommendation you would see a difference. For example, he would show that there are three different types of body positions when lying down sleeping. There is the nightmare, someone going to bed drunk, and a happy and tranquil sleep. He would demonstrate it first with the assistance of an actress to convey his point.
• As a director, when you work with actors, what do you expect from them? I want them to immerse themselves completely into character and to have a good relationship with their other actors– to be team players. Inevitably, they are the face of why people buy tickets at the box office.
• How much freedom do you give your actors in the interpretation of their role or do you guide them step-by-step? I prefer that the actor propose first. The actor is an artist who will fulfill their proposal. If it doesn’t complement the other actor with whom they are interacting, then it’s my job to finesse it.
• What do you seek from an actor when casting? That they can carry out the character I have envisioned in my script.
• What turns you off about an actor in a casting session? When I feel that they’re false. It’s better to feel something fresh and real. I like to work with a casting director and get feedback too.
• Having worked in both genres, which is your preference: documentaries or narratives? I love them both. I love each for what it brings to the table. Docs are real people and you watch a situation develop in front of your own eyes. A narrative calls me because it permits me to work with actors and imaginary situations – especially my next proposed film that involves a magical transport.
• Lastly, what are your $0.10 for narrative filmmakers? Follow your instincts. If you are passionate about the story, follow your instincts in any capacity that can include dealing with actors, location, crew, to who you align yourself with in a project.

The Primetime Emmy Award is an American accolade bestowed by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in recognition of excellence in American primetime television  programming. First given in 1949, the award was originally referred to as simply the "Emmy Awards" until the first Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies were held in the 1970s, and the word "primetime" was added to distinguish between the two. Emmys are considered the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film), Grammy Awards (for music) and Tony Awards (for stage).

The 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, California, and will be hosted by Seth Meyers of NBC's "Saturday Night Live". The 66th Creative Arts Awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

SAG-AFTRA National Board Approves Tentative Agreement with AMPTP and Recommends Ratification

National Network Code Negotiating Committee Approved

Los Angeles and New York (July 12, 2014) – The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) National Board of Directors met today in a one-day videoconference plenary and overwhelmingly approved the tentative agreement reached with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers at midnight on July 4. With the board’s approval, the deal now goes to the union’s membership for ratification.

Eligible SAG-AFTRA members will vote on the proposed successor agreements covering motion pictures, scripted primetime dramatic television and new media production. The tentative deal unifies SAG and AFTRA television contracts under a new 2014 SAG-AFTRA Television Agreement. In addition, the first industry-wide agreement for performers in basic cable production is now incorporated into the new Television Agreement.
Click here for a PDF of key deal points.

The board approved the tentative agreement 90 percent to 10 percent and recommended a vote of “yes” to ratify the contracts.

In keeping with the National Board’s prior policy resolution in this area, the national referendum for the TV/Theatrical agreements will be conducted via an online vote to ratify the contracts. Traditional paper ballots will also be available on request to any eligible voter who requests such a ballot.

Members who are eligible to vote (under the National Multi-Employer Collective Bargaining Agreement Policy) will receive a postcard with ballot instructions explaining how to vote electronically or how to request a paper ballot. This postcard will be mailed to members on or about July 23, 2014.

The ratification votes received by the voting deadline of approximately August 22, 2014, (electronically or by mail) will be tabulated that day.

Additionally, informational meetings will be scheduled for members across the country.  Comprehensive details of the agreement will be posted prior to the balloting period.

The current contracts remain in effect during the member ratification process. The term of the new agreement is for three years effective July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2017 and is retroactive upon ratification.

SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard said, “I am grateful to the board for its approval and recommendation of this agreement and I am proud of what the negotiating team was able to achieve in this negotiation. The unification of the contracts was a priority for us and is a significant gain as is the wage increase — this is the first 3 percent increase in a couple of contract cycles and that is great. This landmark agreement includes provisions that will serve the members for years to come.”

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator David White said, “In addition to securing immediate increases for our members, our negotiating committee remained focused on the long-term vitality of this union and of our contracts. I’m pleased that we achieved the essential and historic unification of our entertainment agreements as well as a substantial wage increase and a boost to employer contributions to our benefits plans. We also improved terms for streaming content and in other areas of new media. Overall, this negotiation embraces the many changes sweeping the industry and positions our membership for strength at the bargaining table in the years ahead.”

Formal negotiations between the 26-member SAG-AFTRA Negotiating Committee and the AMPTP began on Monday, May 5, in Los Angeles and concluded at midnight on July 4, 2014. Talks were preceded by wages and working conditions meetings held this past spring.

Board members also approved the appointment of a National Network Code Wages & Working Conditions Committee of 13 voting members and ten alternates that will also serve as the negotiating committee. SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard will chair the committee and National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator David White will serve as Chief Negotiator for the union. The Network Code Wages and Working Conditions process will commence on or after August 11 and ending on or about September 5.

The Network Code is among the union’s largest national collective bargaining agreements and covers programming in all television day parts, except for primetime dramatic programs on the networks and The CW. This includes morning news shows, talk shows, serials (soap operas), variety, reality, contests, sports, first-run syndicated dramas and promotional announcements. Current programs covered by this contract include:
Good Morning America, The View, The Price is Right, General Hospital, Saturday Night Live, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice, Survivor, 20/20, and Late Show with David Letterman, among others.

"Jane The Virgin" Star Gina Rodríguez On Seeing Yourself (And Your Cultural Identity) On Screen

Gina Rodríguez.
"I didn’t become an artist to be a millionaire. I didn’t become an actor to wear Louis Vuitton. I have to give this dress back when we’re done.I became an actor to change the way I grew up. The way I grew up, I never saw myself on screen. I have two older sisters. One’s an investment banker. The other one is an doctor, and I never saw us being played as investment bankers and actors. And I realized how limiting that was for me. I would look at the screen and think, ‘Well, there’s no way I can do it, because I’m not there.’ And it’s like as soon as you follow your dreams, you give other people the allowance to follow theirs.
And for me, to look on younger girls and to say, ‘Well, Gina’s like me, maybe not necessarily the same skin color, maybe not necessarily the same background, but like that’s me. I’m not alone. I can do it too.’ So every role that I’ve chosen has been ones that I think are going to push forward the idea of my culture, of women, of beauty, my idea of liberating young girls, of feeling that they have to look at a specific beauty type."–GINA RODRÍGUEZ, star of the upcoming The CW television series "Jane The Virgin", at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills on July 18, 2014.

"Jane the Virgin" premieres Monday, October 13, 2014 on The CW. It is a loose adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela "Juana la Virgen" (created by Perla Farías). The television series also stars HOLA member Andrea Navedo, Justin Baldoni, Brett Dier, Ivonne Coll, Yael Grobglas and Jaime Camil. NALIP and WORLD Channel Announce $15K Media Grant RFP in Support of American Graduate

The NALIP WORLD Channel American Graduate Digital Video Project RFP Will Award Three $15K Grants to Create Digital Video Shorts

Deadline: Friday, August 15, 2014 - APPLY HERE

Overview:
The NALIP WORLD Channel American Graduate Digital Video Project is a competitive open call to media producers to submit RFP (Request for Proposals) for digital video shorts in support of American Graduate:  Let’s Make it Happen.

American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen is a public media initiative made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to help communities address the high school dropout crisis and keep more students on the path to success in college and careers.  The initiative supports the creation of national and local content that increases understanding and dialogue around the social, economic, and policy complexities surrounding the dropout issue and highlights solutions to help spur action at the local level.

Description:
The RFP should be submitted by 11:59 p.m. PST, Friday, August 15th, 2014 - APPLY HERE.

Selected producers will be notified by Monday, October 6th, 2014.
The final three (3) selected proposals will receive a $15,000 grant to produce the digital video short or short series for distribution via World Channel. Selected producers will work with NALIP and WORLD Channel throughout the development, pre and post production processes, all working towards a WORLD Channel premiere airdate in the spring of 2015.

A budget should be reflected within each proposal outline, while exploring an innovative concept surrounding the American Graduate theme and adhering to WORLD Channel's public media provided guidelines.

NALIP and WORLD requests the following application materials for consideration:
• Submission form and work sample
• Concept proposal (including how concept is appropriate for public media)
• Budget outline
• Production timeline.

Background:
Funding for the NALIP/WORLD American Graduate digital video project will be provided by CPB. CPB launched the American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen initiative as a response to the dropout crisis in which nearly one million children fail to graduate with their peers each year. Since 2011, more than 80 public media stations and national content producers have played a significant role in increasing awareness of the issue and inspiring caring adults to get involved. Over the next two years, American Graduate public media stations will work with their local communities to develop long term solutions in early childhood education; focus on where graduation gaps exist for students of different races, ethnicities, family incomes, and disabilities, as well as those with limited English proficiency; and celebrate local leaders and every day heroes who are committed to improving outcomes for youth as “American Graduate Champions.” More information about the initiative is available at http://americangraduate.org/.

WORLD is a 24/7 national multicast channel that features dynamic documentary and news programming from across the country and around the world. WORLD offers the best of public television’s nonfiction programming from respected, award-winning journalists as well as original content from emerging producers. WORLD offers a second home to FRONTLINE, NOVA, American Experience, Nature, P.O.V., PBS NewsHour, Independent Lens, Tavis Smiley, Washington Week, and other PBS news shows. WORLD also features multicultural producers and work that is by, about, and for communities of difference, including race, religion, culture, ethnicity, gender and abilities. WORLD aims to appeal to public television viewers interested in new voices, emerging technology and social media.

RFP Review and Selection:
Proposals will be reviewed by NALIP, WORLD, and CPB staff.
